ERJ 145 APU.

The APU of this a/c is very noisy. I believe it's one of the loudest out there.

Why is that?
How much A is there is Airliners Net ? 0 or nothing ?

I agree. Of all the aircraft I have seen, and heard, the ERJ APU is very noisy. The CRJ is a whisper compared to the ERJ. I got to tour the inside and out of the FLJetconnect CRJ, and when I walked around the back, it was quiet, and the APU blew it's warm exhaust all over me and it felt so good from that 32 degree cold weather in ATL.

Did the APU you heard have the silencer installed? There is a huge difference between the silenced and unsilenced versions.

Perhaps it costs a lot. Maybe that's why some airlines don't have it.
How much A is there is Airliners Net ? 0 or nothing ?

The APU is only loud if you are standing directly beneath it, otherwise, it's bearable to work anywhere around the aircraft without ear plugs. It is possible that you could be mistaking the sound of the air conditioning packs for the sound of the APU. The AC packs are located on each side of the aircraft near the forward wing root. The high pitch noise is piercing, so it is typical to only use the right pack while the main cabin door is open. The left pack, of which 75% of its air goes to the cockpit, is usually turned on after the engines are started. While they are noisy, one can't complain of their effectiveness. They'll actually blow snow into the cabin even when the outside air temperature is above 100 degrees!

I saw a Swiss E145 with a sort of nozzle on the APU. And it was much more quiet.
How much A is there is Airliners Net ? 0 or nothing ?

Being technical, the "snow" would be really hail hehehe, I do agree the packs works well.
As to why the APU is loud? It just is. Try writing to Hamilton Sundstrand (it's manufacturer) The silencer helps a lot, but it is just a very loud APU. But it works (75% of the time, unless it is winter when glycol gets in there)

Yeah, you're right. Those little ice pellets that fly through the cabin get annoying. One passenger complained to the flight attendant that someone was shooting spit-balls at her. I'd rather have the frozen precip in the cabin any day over sitting in the sweltering heat like an MD-80 or a classic Boeing.

I had the opportunity to compare APU's on ERJ's a couple of weeks ago in MSY. Our plane parked right next to another company plane that had the old short exhaust pipe on it, and even inside our cabin I had to stuff TP in my ears to avoid hearing damage. There is quite a difference in noise levels between the two APU's. As noted above, the A/C packs generate quite a bit of noise too (as well as snow in the cabin). It is always funny when the flight deck switches both packs on because you can hear the ice moving through the ducts right before the pellets spit out onto the pax.
