PPL Vision Requirements

Just going over some preliminary paperwork for PPL training, and I just read that 20/50 vision is the minimum. Mine is very significantly worse than that but correctable to 20/20. I believe there is a waiver process; is that right? If so, what are the realistic minimums on vision?

I need to get out and get my medical done, but I'm just wondering what I should expect going into it, or if there's any point to doing so. (I mean it, my vision is awful.) Also, not that this is anything close to resembling an immediate concern, but with poor vision, would I have any chance of one day acquiring an ATP license?

Sorry for asking a question that's surely been covered before -- the search didn't turn anything up for me though, and I couldn't find anything useful on the internet.

you need to be corrected to 20/20, or 20/40 with the waiver i think. ask your AME, he'll know. the medical exam is just like a normal physical, with the exception that you get this little piece of paper at the end of it.

If it's correctable to 20/20 in all aspects (near, middle, distant), no problem with any class medical! They'll issue you a medical right then and there without any waiver, just a restriction on it, similar to a driver license, that you must wear corrective lenses. As long as you can correct it to 20/20, you're eligible for the Class 1 medical no problem (in the eyes at least)  Smile/happy/getting dizzy There are some other certain visual requirements pertaining to the FAA medical, I'll look for a link shortly.

You are eligible for a 3rd class medical with vision correctable to 20/40. 3rd class only applies to private pilot priviledges, when you move up to commercial and ATP licenses, you'll need higher medicals (requiring corrected to 20/20).

If you are correctable to 20/20 then don't worry about it.

I was flying around 20/200 correctable.

I also belive that those floors that the others mentioned are waivable under a demonstration of ability process.

I don't remember the name of the group but they are working on developing systems for blind pilots.
OBAMA-WORST PRESIDENT EVER....Even SKOORB would be better.
