A Question About The A320?

Thu Sep 25, 2003 8:25 am

Hi guys.

I have a quick question about tailstrikes "Oops!"  Laugh out loud I meant to say A320's.

In the 3 photos below you can see what appears to be a dark straight pipe pointing down from the bottom of the fuselage. I would normally think that this pipe is just a drain mast for the forward galley, however, this pipe is located pretty far forward, directly under the cockpit.

My questions are ..... Is this a drainage pipe, or is it actually some kind of sensor that I don't reconize?

If it is for drainage, what's the source? The forward cargo hold perhaps?

In this photo, you can see this pipe a few feet ahead of the the lower pitot tube.

There's one of these pipes on both sides of the lower nose section.

Seems to be the TAT probe (Total Air Temperature). The two "horizontal" ones are the pitot tubes.

And for your info, just below the second "O" of Cook, this is the angle of attack sensor. The two "painting free" zones are the static ports.

Hello Spitfire.

OK, Thanks for your explanation. I had a feeling that these object might be sensors of some kind because there's two of them up on the nose where a lot of the sensors & probes are located. However, I was tricked by their appearance. They look like simple round pipes/tubes to me, instead of what I'm used to seeing an AOA or TAT probe look like. Perhaps it's just the angle the photos were taken from.

Don't some air temp propes have square box ends on them with little holes in it?

Hi Chris,
If you look closely, that's the case (more or less visible on the Eidelweiss Air picture).

Spitfire,

you seem to know a bit about those unpainted zones.  Smile  I'd like to ask what that zone beneath the "k" of "Cook" is, also a static port?

Thanks in advance!

The unpainted zone below the "K" of Cook is a double static port (two holes) . There is another one on the nose.

The static ports on the lower fusealge below the 'K' are the ports for the standby flight instruments. The TAT probe does have holes in it and is kind of airfoil shaped.
If anybody wants any A318-319-320-321 info, give a shout. I see them up close and personal every day!!

Hello Jetmek319.

Thanks for your reply.

OK, so the TAT probe does have those little pin holes in it.

The object in the first photo of the Air France A320 in my original post, that I thought looked like at pipe (it still looks like a pipe to me Big grin) must be on a bad angle to the camera, because I don't see a square box or airfoil shape at the bottom of it at all. Maybe I'm going blind!  Nuts

I believe the 2 dark objects that are a few feet in front of the B747 cockpit windscreen & the side of the DC-10's lower nose are TAT probes. That's what I'm used to them looking like.

Hi Mr.Spaceman,
I'll do some checking in the AMM, but I'm fairly sure that we're looking at the TAT probe. The photo is kind of hard to see it, but this sensor is airfoil shaped, about 4" long, 10-12 small holes in the leading edge, and is capped with a airfoil shaped plate that is slightly larger than the probe itself. I'll write again tomorrow to verify (0200 here!!)

And I look forward to learning from everybody here!!!
