Why No Winglets On The 737-600

if i am not mistaken, the 737-600 is a next generation aircraft. the -300 through -500 were the 2nd generations. then why has boeing not fitted winglets to the -600 model? i understand that they only help duing long range flights, but how long must the range be to get a savings? boeing is starting to boggle my mind... Nuts

Hi Cancidas,
To the best of my knowledge the winglets are an option on the "nex-gen" aircraft, except the BBJ. There is a company that is applying for an STC to fit the "classic" (-200 thru -500) models with an aftermarket winglet kit. Ameri-jet has applied these winglets to some of thier 727-200F aircraft!

Most 736's have very short routes. Simply put, winglets would have minimal benefits. Not worth the additional costs.
I'm not a real aeronautical engineer, I just play one on Airliners.net.

I´m not sure about it, but I think the -600 is just not heavy enough. It is fitted with the same wings as the -700 to -900 and they are all heavier than the -600. So the wing of the -600 generates less lift and therefore less turbulences at the wing tips. Increasing drag by fitting a winglet (in order to minimize turbulence) may be less economical than accepting some (few) turbulences.
But I´m sure if someone wants his -600 fitted with winglets, they´ll do it.

The winglets actually decrease drag by decreasing the wingtip voticies. There is some consideration being given to winglets for the -600 but there isn't any demand as the plane is considered a bare-bones, short haul, small load economy version of the plane.
One more thing, the winglets were created to make the BBJ more visually appealing. They all have them unless specifically eliminated by the customer.
Boeing (as a group) was surprised and continues to be surprised by the economy figures as the database is built.

Lets not forget there are not very many 737-600 out there and not many operators.
