Can A 737-800 Fly SBRJ/SDU To SBSP/CGH?

Sat Oct 11, 2003 8:44 pm

I saw that Varig only uses 737-300s for their shuttle from SDU to CGH. SDU has a very short runway (4341 ft the longer of the two) and when taking off on the 20 rwys one has to make a dramatic turn to avoid crashing into sugar loaf mountain.

Are there technical reasons that make Varig use the 733 rather than the 738s? Would the 738s be technically just as able to take off from that airport?

Mozart,

From what I understand, the 737-800 and the A320 are a bit to heavy for operating into SDU, even the 737-300 has some penalties on very hot days during the summer and believe me, Rio can be very hot..

Congonhas, on the other hand, has a regular operation with -800s, not VARIG, though, but GOL. RG has only two -800s and they are used on some domestic trunk routes and a few international services.

Cheers
