Diesel Engine

just read the thread about the "oversized engines"...

I think I've read an article some time ago, about Diesel-driven engines an small privates, probably some prop-engines...

Do I remeber correctly or did my weird brain just srew something up?

there are conversions that can be done by lycoming or other manufacturers that allow you to use diesel or jet a in piston engines. this is valuable in areas where 100ll or even 100 octane is not available. there are also conversions available that allow fueling with regular car gasoline.

Went to a fly-in this summer, and there was a diesel engine on display in a small GA aircraft, don't remember who manufactured it though, but you are right, they do exist.

Thielert offer an engine called Centurion 1.7 which is approved for JetA and Diesel in any mixture ratio. The Centurion is JAA certified in the Diamond DA40 and DA 42.

There has been a fair bit of development work in small GA diesel engines in the last 5 yrs or so. The main benefit of the diesel is that it will burn Jet-A, given as already mentioned that the availability of 100LL begins to decline. I would imagine a diesel engine would also have some reliability and durability advantages over the 100LL fueled counterparts.

I flew a Diamond DA40TDI with the Thielert Common Rail Diesel engine the other day, and I must say that I was impressed. Fuel costs are very low, and the performance, even on higher altitudes was quite good due to the turbo charged engine. The computerized flight control is very convenient, but needs some time to get used to. For example, the entire run-up check is just pushing one button.
