I recently came across some pictures of the "noise reduction area" for engine tests at Zürich. How exactly does it work? I can see the center/centre one directs the exhaust and noise upwards, but that's all I can really tell from looking at the pictures. Could anyone offer some insight as to what's the story behind these things? How much do they help? Are there any other pictures in the d/b of these devices? At what other airports are they used? Are there different types of these devices? I'm not sure, but I think I might have seen one in an old book about 707s and the like.
Thanks in advance!

I've never seen anything like this before but from what I can see of this pic it appears that the exhaust from #1 & #3 is redirected through the structures leading away from the aircraft to each side. Other than that, I imagine each tube is fitted with baffles that reduce the noise level to an acceptable level. All of this is pure conjecture on my part but it sounds plausible.

Here at RNO, the Nevada Air National Guard used to have F-4's, and they sometimes used what we called a "hush house" which appears to be similar in design to what is shown in your photos. Sorry I don't know more about them.
