First Solo Was Today

Fri Dec 05, 2003 8:02 am

I was surprised. With 14 kts head wind, well, about 35 degrees off runway heading, I soloed. After my instructor and I did a few t/o's and Landings, he told me to go up to the ramp. He then hopped out and said it all you. he went into the tower to watch. I did 3 touch and goes like he said, and returned. All my landings were great, I surprised myself. The first time around was pretty busy, 4 airplanes including myself. The tower was paicent and did not get to mad with my abilty to not see airplanes until they were hard to miss. Over all, I am oretty happy about it. The flight director shook my hand, and thats that. Thought I would share. Big grin

Good job. I don't think that I really got crosswind landings figured out until a little while ago, and I'm a CFI!

Let's see, my first solo was on April 30th, 1994, in Cessna 152, tail number N68353. No wind, uncontrolled airfield, had the pattern all to myself.

Heck of a deal!

I remember good old N5174D, the skyhawk I soloed in. It was about the fastest Skyhawk I ever flew...it'd cruise at book (122kt)!

Congratulations man! That's an awesome feeling, and huge accomplishment.

I'm a big dork, so I don't remember that much from my first solo, but I'm sure you will. Now, the checkride, you'll never forget that one  Smile

I not only remember my first in 1964...Piper Tri-Pacer owned by Del Norte High School in Crescent City California. It and my 140 are the only two high winged planes I've ever flown.
My mother has yet to forgive me for coming home with a totally ruined "new" shirt.

Congratulations! You're embarking on a journey most of mankind can only imagine and wonder at.

Hi NWA, Buzz here. Sounds good... write down the details in a journal (my teenage s call it a diary) so you can remember as the years go by. I have several pages of notes i'd typed up while learning to fly. Writing notes about each day's flying helped sort it out in my brain so i'd learn the lessons better.
I soloed in a Cub in 2000. After almost 20 years of airplane-fixing i decided to get serious about flying for fun. I even thought of a reson that made sense to my wife: I've been taking care of sick airplanes... when can i play with healthy ones? All told it took me 3 years of stop and go flight instruction before i got my PPL.
I learned to fly near Portland Oregon, at Evergreen airfield. It's got grass, one skinny paved runway. I prefer taildraggers... have about 35 hours of C-150 time. All the rest is in Cubs, Champs, Piper Super Cruisers, DC-3, T-6, and a STOL C-150 Texas Taildragger, and C-180.
I still think of myself as a student, i'm still learning things and also sharing the knowlege of Classic Taildraggers with my flying buddies.
g'day

Congratulations NWA!!
My instructor did the same thing to me; I flew the airplane back on a cross-country. When we landed, he got out on the runway and told me to do a couple of take-offs and landings. I didn't have the cross wind problem you had, but it was late afternoon and the beacon was already on. So, technically, I soloed at night.

Cool stuff NWA!

I'm sure you all agree with me when I say that the first 5 seconds are scary as h-ll, followed by 15 wonderful minutes, actually being a pilot!

Mine was 8th of March this year, in N6295R, a 172N, at Kalispell City Airport, Montana.

To go with the acolades, I will add mine. Welcome to the PIC club bud!!

My first solo was much like yours. Only thunderstorms coming in and not having one normal pattern because tower had me doing s-turns and extending downwind to get all the jets out before the storm. It started raining right after he got back in the plane. I remember my first takeoff. I forgot to set flaps to takeoff. My first landing was great. Then I realized I was on my own Wow!

You'll have many flights that you'll forget but this is one of the few that will always stand out. Congradulations again

The moment I remember the most was when the mains lifted off the runway. Thought to myself"I have to land this, don't I?". It was ok though. Made em' nice and soft. Thanks again guys. Always the first ones to shake your hand. I appreciate you guys answering my questions, and calming me down after I got airsick that one time. Thanks a bunch!

Well done. It is a wonderful feeling. I remember having the extra space to keep my stuff on the other seat. I was at first worried if I did the right thing, if I did everything I was supposed to do (even with the checklists). Then, I suddenly realised, I COULD FLY.

NWA man that's great!!! How many hours did you have under your belt. I'm in the low teens as far as hours go and am getting nervous about that day... Don't you just love that C172! My rides are all 20 years old and smell like grandpa's old Cadillac... Love them though! I was hoping to solo on the 17th to make the day even that more special but weather has been bad for the past month and a half in Washington DC (Leesburg - JYO) and wasn't able to fly for a month or so...

Good luck man and congratulations! Blue Skies!

As fate would have it, I'm currently listening to Pearl Jam's "Given to Fly" as I type this. Ah, it's a great song for flying. Congrats! A first solo is such a huge milestone. I think it meant more to me than passing my CFI checkride (but not much).

"A wave came crashing like a fist to a jaw, delivered him wings, 'Hey, look at me now!' Arms wide open with the sea as his floor... He is flying, on!"

"And sometimes is seen a strange spot in the sky, a human being that was given to fly."

Congrats! Welcome to the club.

Way to go, NWA!!

I'm going up today for my third flight....so I'm WAY behind you. But I've got a great instructor who really loves what he's doing (his full time job is as Asst Ops Director at ELP), and I seem to be doing OK for the first two sessions.

Got to get back to the books before heading over to 5T6 for todays lesson!

Nothing like that first time. Does seem like yesterday, and I look in my logbook now and see about 230 hours. Still wet behind the ears, but having more fun than the law allows.

Enjoy it; it keeps getting better.
