737-400 Weight And Balance?

Thu Dec 18, 2003 3:48 pm

Hi...

Today I was flying on a US 737-400 CLT-FLL, the flight was about 2/3rds full, and we pushed back and began our taxi normally. We had almost reached the threshold of the runway when we stopped abruptly in the middle of the taxiway, and the f/o came on the P.A. and made an announcement saying that central dispatch had contacted them and they wanted to adjust their weight and balance. The f/a's then sprang into action and started shuffling around bags in the overhead, moving them in no discernible pattern around the cabin, and several people were asked to move forward, and in one case, all the way up into F class...

My question is, is this a routine procedure, and, why was it necessary???

I've had crews come down and ask us to move bags from the aft hold to the front or vice versa at least a dozen times. It was necessary because they may have found that the aircraft would be near a CG limit. This can greatly affect the handling of the aircraft, and cause higher stall speeds(depending on fore or aft, the effects are different for each).

True. An aft CoG will result in a lower stall speed, however I believe the driving factor in CoG location is longitudinal and directional stability (also trim drag in the cruise) - therefore forward better than aft.
