Any Good References For Designing A FBO?

Sat Dec 27, 2003 9:17 pm

Or other fueling operation?

My brother and I where throwing around the idea that the local airport needs one.

Tried to get on the Garsite website but it is down for reworking.

Got to look at Harlans and Stewart and Stevensons webiste also.

Looking for US specs.

Any help would be much appreciated.

An AvGas truck with about a 500-1200 Gallon capacity. Jet-A truck with about 1500 gallon capacity. Sell Premix to keep it simple. A hangar with the ability to hold whatever aircraft your field can handle. The FBO I'm at doesn't have a hangar and it kills our business when the weather gets nasty. A lav cart. A good tug and 28V GPU that run no matter what. Towbars for whatever aircraft you may see.

Now for the facility itself, this is what I look for: Friendly staff, comfy lounge/lobby with cable, some sort of weather service like WSI or Meteorlogix, vending machines, and a reliable courtesy car that I can make a run to the local burger place with.

That's pretty much the extent of my list. I would rather have what I need and not the extras that bring rediculous fees like Signature charges. Then again, I'm just working through my ratings and the costs of those extra fees comes out of my pocket. Some day when I'm flying Joe and Jane Richpersons around in their G600 Big thumbs up those costs won't matter so I'll prefer the extra TLC.

I don't know exactly for what you are looking but this might help.

http://www.victorygse.com

http://www.omegaaviation.com

http://www.gsetoday.com

Above are some ground support equipment trade sites. But you might have already found them.

http://www.chevrontexacoaviation.com

http://www.avfuel.com

http://www.airbp.com (This page doesn't want to work today)

and there is Shell aviation. You can get to them indirectly through http://www.aeroshell.com

I got to talking with a guy from AvFuel. According to him, the only FBO franchise is Million Air.

I really think that a self serve avgas facility at this airport would be the way to go.

Designing and equipping and FBO isn't the problem, properly managing one is. I've seen many well designed, well furnished FBO go under. There is an old joke in aviation - "How do you make a million dollars in aviation? Start out with $5 milion." Your home work should concentrate on the business plan.
