It's white to begin with, but goes a creamy/brown colour after the corrosion inhibitor is applied. After a few years it is basically black.

Wheel wells are generally of the greenish color but I have seen some brown, or some grey... then all that gets somewhat dirty, with the splashes from the wheels... For me I would say greenish is most common, at least in the ones that I fly currently... Honest, I do not often look in there, except when a flight engineer tells me to go look at the wheels to get my opinion about a worn-out tire...

Thank you.

Skipper: Do you think that greenish color is the one also used in the 737 wheel wells?

I'm asking because I'll sonn be building a Virgin 747-200 model, and don't think that the suggested silver/aluminium color is too accurate.

The ones I´ve been in (quite a few) wre of the following clours:
Primary structure white, with a brownish-transparent covering of AV8 (corrosion preventive) and plenty of dirt.
Components: Green of zinc chromate primer.

I can't say I've seen a Zinc Chromate Boeing Wheel Well. VC-10 and MD11Engineer have this one right. BTW 737's are white also.
This plane is built to withstand anything... except a bad pilot.

Tg 747-300: Our fleet, and all the ones I've ever worked are white, going to light brown with the corrossion inhibitor. I'd go that way if you want realism. Could add some purple, gray, brown, or black highlights and streaks to be super accurate. Regards,

DL_Mech,

I didn´t say that the whole wheel well was green, just components like flap torque tubes and gearboxes. Also the big APU air duct is silver to golden. Of course the main structure (bulkheads, keel beam, rear spar, landing gear beam ) is white with a brownish coating of AV8

HI Tg 747-300, Buzz here. I've seen Boeing build it's wheel wells and color them white - so it's easier to find leaks. The DC-8's we had had a primer green color wheel wells and not many lights, so it was always a gloomy place at night.
Primer green would be for accessories inside: spoiler mixers, flap transmissions, torque tubes - which might have an orange/black spiral painted on them. The APU bleed air duct often has a black shroud around it, and is a golden color - titainium plated with gold for skydrol protection.
That amazing AV8 corrosion preventive spray gives a golden brown transparent color, it's made by Dinol. We used to use LPS-3 but that stuff was always slippery / sticky. The Dinol AV8 will dry to a hard film so you don't get so messy as you rub up against it.
g'day
