CF680C2D1F Exhaust Question

I've noticed that older versions of the CF6-80 have a smaller, stubby exhaust cone and the newer ones are much longer. Why did GE change them? Less drag? It can't make too much difference because I've seen MD11s with both types of cones..

Most likely noise reduction. Those exhaust plugs are supposed to change the airflow to create a quieter exhaust
