If people in the Detroit area and the airline decision makers decided to work towards bringing scheduled airline service to a second airport in the Greater Detroit area, which would it be? DET, PKT, or YIP?

Of course there would be other options, possibly working to make Selfridge with a 9000' runway a joint use airport although they look to be land-locked. A positive point for this option is that it is on the northeast side of Greater Detroit at about the same distance to downtown as DTW.

Another option could be building a brand new airport, but where?

I know DET at one time had scheduled service but the runways are fairly short and it appears looking at the city map that the property is also land locked.

PTK has a lot of general aviation in and out of there. Could they enlarge both the east-west runways to say 9000' X 150' or are they space challenged? A positive for this option would be they could draw passengers from the north side and northeast side of Detroit as well as people from around Flint. Another argument between the three (YIP, DET and PTK) is that PTK is the farthest of the three from DTW.

YIP already has freight operations in and out of there and has more options in terms of space and number of current runways. It appears just looking at a map that it is not as landlocked as the other options. A positive for this option is that it can draw people from around Ann Arbor and Jackson. A negative would be that it is too close to DTW.

I am just curious as I have ties to that area and fly there or drive to southeast Michigan frequently.

Hello Tiger,

Ah, DTW!!...My old stomping grounds! My guess would be that IF there were to be any airport development in the Detroit area, it would be to the north (PTK or thereabouts). DTW is easy access for the bulk of the travelers in the city proper and points west. Even from Ann Arbor DTW is only a half-hour drive under most circumstances thus YIP would be redundant (not to mention a headache for ATC). For the areas to the north, however, it's another story. It can easily take an hour or more to get to DTW from cities up in Oakland or Macomb county. I think though that DTW will continue to be the only airport serving Detroit for some time to come. Once they renovate the old terminals (or build a new one), the DTW complex will have more than enough capacity to handle the flow well into the future.

Regards,

Mike
