Etops 207. Only available on a flight-by-flight basis?

Wed Jan 21, 2004 10:16 pm

I have read that the 207 etops limit is only available on a flight-by-flight basis.
What it means? Here in the UK if I we are 180 etops we can fly 180 minutes always without any restriction. During the briefing the dispatcher tell us witch limit he have used for the flight preparation but I never heard a flight-by-flight base.

The Americans use a flight-by-flight basis for 180 ETOPS as well, they can't use it across the Atlantic because they don't need it....  Nuts

They can only exercise the 180 ETOPS privileges on trans-pacific routes.

Bit of a crazy philosophy I know, as here in the UK if our aircraft is 180 ETOPS we can use that on any route.

Yes I know but my question are: when they can switch to 207 minutes? There's some rules?

Thusfar, ETOPS207 has only been granted to 777 operators, and only across the northern Pacific... where it was instituted after AA flew N777AN ORD-HKG-DFW to test for both it, as well as a plethora of other details concerning the transpolar routes.

ETOPS180 can now be done on the southern Pacific (which is what allowed UA to op LAX-AA), New Zealand">AKL as a 772ER before they killed it).

I'm just curious to know....ETOPS is a calculated risk (albeit small). Does anyone know what the predicted likelihood is of when an aircraft operating on ETOPS will eventually experience total power loss?

Just for the sake of candor, longhaul flying outside of ETOPS is very much a calculated risk in and of itself....

...particularly considering the lack of equivalent fire suppression.
