A332 Engines - The Difference?

Fri Mar 26, 2004 5:21 am

Hi,

I was wondering what's the difference between the 3 types of engines available on the A332, and how does companies choose between the 3.

I know the Pratt's are not as powerful as the GE or RR, but is the choice only "political" or linked to standardization in the company. Is it consumption, ETOPS constraints... ?

Can anyone enlighten me on this matter?

Cheers

I think Price plays a major role in choice as well as what other kinds of Engines the airline has. I think political reasons are the least of their worries when the choice boils down. RR tends to be the biggest choice though.

Price, commonality, throttle response, fuel thirst, performance, maintenance, reputation/reliability, politics, etc are all factors which determine engine choice.

The main issues concerning airlines in their choice of engine (for any plane of course, not just A330s) are fleet commonality, fuel consumption, and price. Other factors come into play based on the sort of specific operations their aircraft will be undertaking.

For some airlines variety also plays a role. If they're big in the maintenance business, they want to have knowledge of as many different engines as possible. (see Lufthansa A319/A320 with CFMs vs. their A321 with IAEs)

Airlines will choose the engine and airframe they feel will give them the best return on investment. Of course since one is predicting forward it doesn't always work out that way.

Pratt had the most powerful variant for the 330 under development before Sept 11th, the PW4173. US' orders were for that engine type on at least half their frames.

Interesting Gigneil...

That's the first time I even hear about this PW4173 engine... What happened to it? Was it eventually dropped?

Thanks

Rumor, and I do repeat rumor, has it that the design is complete and could go right to production if PW was so inclined.

Myself, I'm surprised NW and US didn't pressure them harder for it.
