No More NOTAMs In North America

Thu Apr 01, 2004 4:38 pm

(Reuters) By a joint decision between FAA and CAA, NOTAM will cease to exist in North America. Those NOtices To AirMen were frowned upon by female pilots' associations.
More politically correct NOTAP (NOtices To AirPeople) will take over.
JAA have yet to comment about this annoucement.

What do you think of it ?
Personnally, I'd say stop the PC cr*p, NOTAMs have been known and used by pilots for decades, why change something that worked perfectly fine ?

Exactly my point ! As a co-worker pointd out earlier today, while they're at it, they could as well go to NOTALF (NOtice To Airborne Life Forms) !

707, hopping the JAA will not go for that...

In fact, this has already happened here in Ireland, following a complaint filed by a feminist group; roadsigns stating "Men At Work" were replaced by "Persons AT Work".

One of the main stereotypes women have to deal with in life is that they can be unneccesarily petty, controlling and nasty. When a woman "makes a big deal" about something, she is less likely to be listened to than a man. This is because it is commonly believed that women are more likely to make a big deal about things that really don't matter than a man is.

The behavior of feminist groups do NOTHING to counter this. It is as though they are deliberatly trying to make themselves (and unfortunatly, innocent women) look like a stereotype. If feminists want to advance sexism in the western world, I can think of nothing better they can do then to try to bend every little petty thought and word in the language to their spoiled-child like will. That is exactly what the true cheuvanists think all women who have opinions are like, and actually being like that will do nothing to fight them. It will merely give the (false) appearance of proving the bigots right.

Please, Ben, don't throw Elbonia (tm) in it, we have already enough problems with Scott Addams regarding that issue...

Did you know, that according to JAA rules, if an aircraft is crewed by female pilots only, the term box office is used instead of cockpit?! Big grin

LMAO!

That's hilarious!

In Sweden (entire Scandinavia?), male nurses (as Starlionblue mentioned in another thread) are referred to as "female nurses". It would be great to see the male nurses start whining about this! Politcians and the society as a whole would just wave them off and think they're being silly.

In this issue, the "we are all equal, but some are more equal than others" - term certainly applies.

I had a long involved post regarding this, but then I searched news.google.com for "NOTAM" and came up with 3 hits, shown here
http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&edition=us&filter=0&q=notam

none of which mention this story. Further more, a search for NOTAP ( http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&edition=us&filter=0&q=notap ) turns up only one hit, regarding the National Office for Technology Acquisition and Production.

Provide a link to verify this, or I'm calling BS.

Cloudy, it's also known as being a b***h (stereotypically).

NOTAP was the first thing I thought of when I saw the title of this thread.

I only know of one female pilots' association, and it's the women something something.

April Fool's, guys. Or is "guys" not gender neutral, either?

MD-90, I believe the prefered gender-neutral inpersonal pronoun to refer to a group of people is "y'all" or if refering to a large group "all y'all"

 Smile/happy/getting dizzy

And I can think of two women's aviation organizations, Women in Aviation (WIA) and the 99's. Neither one would be bitchy enough to try and change NOTAM. Most female pilots I've had the oppertunity to associate with have been like one of the guys; fun to hang around with and not uppity and pretensious.

Whether this is nothing more than some April Fools tomfoolery, or is actually true, wouldn't Notice To Air Crews (NOTAC) be a more appropriate term to use as opposed to Notice To Air Persons?

By a joint decision between FAA and CAA

What's the CAA? The Canadian Automobile Association? In case you were referring to the Canadian agency that regulates aviation it's Transport Canada also known as TC.

Wasn't the CAA the precurser to the FAA? They came back from the dead to work with the FAA

Sorry, you can't say perSON either - "SON" is a male offspring.

BITCH is an acronym for Boys I'm Taking Charge Here

I've long believed that some cynical and self-serving persons in the feminist movements as well as some politicians just love these silly little gender-related phraseology changes because they attract a lot of attention (something is being done for women) but they are a lot cheaper than actually paying them a wage equal to mens' wages. An illusion of fairness that is easier than a fair reality.

Amen to that, SlamClick.

In Sweden the "jämställdhetsminister" (equality minister. Yes I'm serious) stated last year that at least 25% of the board members of listed companies should be women. "Because they need a female perspective". Needless to say, this proposal was greeted with suspicion, especially by the female executive. Those women want to rise on merit, not quota.

Needless to say, the proposal (they're threatening to make it a law) has not been a success.

FredT

Read the topic, No More NOTAMs In North America, not no more NOTAMs in Europe. Fact is that there are 3 administrations in NA for the matter of aviation.

1) The Federal Aviation Administration (US)
2) Transport Canada
3) Secretaría de Comunicaciones y Transportes (Mexico)

Some of the older pilots still call them that. It's the newers pilots that were trained from day 1 that have no issue with the name changes.
