How Do Flight Trackers Work?

Fri Apr 02, 2004 3:25 am

Take any of the several internet flight tracker sites...... how do they get their info? Obviously something transmitted from the plane to ATC but how/why are these web sites able to intercept this and publish it online? And when they give you miles, as in " 25 mi ENE of _____" are they measuring in nautical or statute miles, same as distance on a map or the distance that pilots go by (nm)?

fboweb.com has extremely detailed info on any flight including a moving map. How do they do that? Are they given exact lat/long coordinates for the aircraft? Isn't this info intended ONLY for the use of air traffic control?

Most of them pull a feed from the national tracking center that, in turn, has links to all the ATC centers.

There's an article somewhere with a guy reviewing "Flight Explorer". Google for that.

Can anyone tell me what flightrackers actually display the aircraft tail number? Are they free?

Flight Explorer Personal Edition is $10 a month for 10 hours and then there is an hourly charge after that. It shows flight numbers of commercial flights and tail numbers of private. That's how the FAA tracks them so that's the data you get.

AirNav Live Flight Tracker costs US$ 64.95 for each 6 months usage and you can use it up to 60 hours per month (not the 10 hours limit mentioned above).
They pull the data from tha central FAA realtime database.

None that know of. Actual tail numbers can (and DO) change often, and since the actual aircraft tail number isn't a part of the domestic airline flight plan filing (USA), there'd be no way for ATC (and thus the ASD that "feeds" the trackers) to know the tail number, unless I'm missing something...

Anyway AirNav Systems (the developers of AirNav Live Flight Tracker) have other programs that will show you the tail number. Check their website.
