Take any of the several internet flight tracker sites...... how do they get their info? Obviously something transmitted from the plane to ATC but how/why are these web sites able to intercept this and publish it online? And when they give you miles, as in " 25 mi ENE
of _____" are they measuring in nautical or statute miles, same as distance on a map or the distance that pilots go by (nm)?
fboweb.com has extremely detailed info on any flight including a moving map. How do they do that? Are they given exact lat/long coordinates for the aircraft? Isn't this info intended ONLY for the use of air traffic control?
