Becoming An Air Accident Investigator

Wed Apr 14, 2004 7:46 pm

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone can give me information on finding my way into the world of aviation safetly, indeed an Air Accident Investigator. What is the British equivalent of the NTSB? I have had friends who have joined the NTSB via internship and it has kick started their careers immensely. Although the possibilities in the UK seem to be less available!

Can anyone help?

Thanks. Dan

The AAIB. Though you'll be spending your time finding out in what new ways GA pilots can land with their gear up.

It's certainly a lot easier to become involved with the NTSB - I recall that one of their former chief investigators, Greg Feith, initially joined effectively as a summer-job helping-hand.

Be prepared for a shock if you're thinking of heading for the AAIB - they ask for a shedload of commercial pilot experience or engineering qualifications up to the eyeballs. In my opinion, it's almost easier to become an airline pilot...

Talk to the chief, Ken Smart, if you're serious. He's a pleasant chap.
