C-17 Landing Gear

Mon May 03, 2004 11:23 am

Can anyone explain the 'doors' just above the landing gear under the wing of this C17? I would suppose they have something to do with the gear retraction sequence, any ideas?

It's doors for the Main landing Gear Shock struts. As the main gear fold up, the shock struts fold back into the fuselage.

Ok... so what do the shock struts do? Are they just regular shock absorbers that are extra long, or are they something special?

I think they have more travel when they are not tucked away, that once the wheels retract, they may punch a hole through the fuselage if the doors weren't there. Anyone wanna add or correct?
