FedEx KIX-MEM, CDG-SFS

Sat May 29, 2004 5:06 am

Can anyone tell me a bit about the loading of these flights, in terms of both volume and weight?

The reason I ask is twofold.

I know they op these flights nonstop, and I know that both flights are far, far outside the range of the MD-11 with anywhere close to its full cargo load.

They're also outside, but not quite as far, of the A380's expected full cargo range.

I'm sure I'm just ignorant on this topic, but my guess is its because the full volume of the planes, when consumed by FedEx Letters, Boxes and Tubes (tm), are well below its full weight.

Anyway, as many details as possible are appreciated. I have this strange fascination with cargo ops.

I did the KIX-MEM flight last month and we did it in just under 13 hours. We carried around 130,000 lbs of freight and 235,000 lbs of fuel. The takeoff weight was pretty close to MTGOW and we landed at about 10,000 lbs under MLW. I hope that helps.

Ok good numbers, so that's about 65 tons of cargo, which is a fair bit less than the 91 tons or so the plane is good for, but still more than I'd imagined for such a long trip.

I'm interested very much in the same detail as Learpilot... 10,000 pounds under MLW certainly sounds like you had a lot of fuel left.

I honestly don't remember how much fuel we had when we landed. I do know that we arrived an hour earlier than planned due to a nice tail wind. The next time I do that flight I'll try to remember to keep a copy of the paper work to give you much more accurate numbers.

The KIX-MEM flight should land with about 20,000#'s in MEM on a good weather night.

I'm constantly impressed by the M11's performance as a cargo hauler.

Does anyone have a payload/range chart for the MD-11?

And Dispatcher, do you dispatch for FX? I think I remember you do, but my memory ain't so good... Is 65ish tons about standard for ya'lls longhaul M11 loads? Do you pack more in on shorter flights, or is 65ish tons the magic number given FedEx's typical product?

NightFlyer, how much layover do you get in KIX after flying this route?

I had almost a two day layover in KIX. I deadheaded over there from LAX on JAL then I flew the flight to MEM.

Hi Nightflyer

The KIX-MEM run intrigues me.

I was under the impression refiling to MEM was done over the Pacific prior to landfall. But reading the FTT screen it appeared to be done relatively deep into continental US. Can you straighten me out on this? Thanks.

FDXmech,
We actually were re-released somewhere over SFO for MEM. The original release point was DEN.

We have 42 MD11's with no plans of adding anymore anytime soon, but we also have 30 something MD10's and adding a new one every five to six weeks.
