Anyone Work Cargo Ground Ops. - What's It Like?

Tue Jun 01, 2004 8:41 pm

Hi,

Just wanted to ask if anyone here works for Fedex or I guess any other air cargo carrier. Live quite near London Stansted where Fedex have a centre and also not too far from Heathrow / Gatwick. I like being at airports and am happy to work nights. Unfortunately the closest I get to flying is Fs2004 but basic loading or something like that in ground ops. might be cool for me. Anyway know very little about how things work so just thought I'd ask. Is it a hard area to get into and is it something where a planespotting kind of guy might fit in??!

Thanks

Pierre

you would definately fit in! the majority of people working there probably aren't spotters or aviation enthusiasts, they're just looking for a job. i'd say go for it, but i work for US Air so i can't really compare to cargo. one of the guys i work with now worked for delta cargo and enjoyed the job for the most part. he left because of the company.

Hi,

Thanks for the info and the vote of confidence  Smile Maybe I'll ask next time I'm there or when I'm at (more local) Gatwick. Call me crazy but air freight just seems like a cool thing to me!

See from your profile that you work LGA. Man i feel like I'm almost there half of the time since I'm always listening to the great ground / tower frequencies you guys have on the internet for LGA, JFK, ORD etc. We could do with some of them here in the UK. And USAir are cool too - used to see quite a lot here at LGW.

Thanks again

I tried to apply for a job at DHL, but I was looking for summer work and they wanted permanent only. I have a few friends who work out there though and they all like it. Seems there is a decent amount of down time when the inside people are packing containers, since they all work outside, loading and unloading the actual airplanes.

I love my job. I work doing freighters all the time, sometimes pax if there are weird loads like cars or overlapping pcs. It's a great feeling when you finish the A/C. If you got any questions let me know I work at JFK

I did graveyard for UPS/Ameriflight in PDX, and a little bit for Kittyhawk in the mornings as well. No flight bennies, which was a bit of downer. Anyway, like cancidas said, almost no one out there is a hobbist. There was another pilot out there, but other than that ijust listened to poeples stories about flying southwest to Japan.
When in doubt, one B pump off
