Wierd Creaking Sound On EMB-145 Landing Gear

Thu Jul 08, 2004 6:54 am

the other day i was repositioning a EMB-145 from ne of our gates to the hangar t-way. the engines were off and i noticed a wierd creaking/ groaning noise coming from the main landing gear when it went over bumps in the ramp. is this normal? i have yet to notice this on any other type we service. anyone have any thoughts? does it just need oil?

Yep it's normal. It's really disconcerting the first couple of times you hear it, and atleast one pax every flight asks about the noise. From what I was told by one of our Mx people it has to do with the main gear struts ( you hear it the loudest at row 12 on the 145). For some reason the older the plane and the closer to our MTOW we are the more likely you'll hear it. It sounds to me like the main gear struts bottoming out.

at first i thought that it was just the hinges in the gear not being oiled. i actually haven't heard it these past fews days... strange.

I heard it the other day on an American Connection flight from PHL to STL. I had no idea what the problem was, I assumed that they just needed to be lubed up...

That's precisely the problem. The landing gear needs to be greased. We've found the best way to lube the gear is to jack the aircraft, lube, perform a retract and lube again. Then lower the plane to the ground. Since we've been dong this, we haven't had a problem.

I've flown a lot of 135s and 145s, occasionally one of them will be really creaky. I actually started laughing to myself hearing the plane taxi up to the gate, creaking over every bump. Sounded like an old car.
