New A380 Pics! - With Tail & Nose

Thu Jul 15, 2004 9:40 am

The rather infrequently updated (once a month I believe) A380 section of the airbus website now has three pictures of the A380 with nose and tail fitted.

In my opinion, it is beginning to look much prettier. Maybe even 'cute' to some people, although not in the same league as the 747SP of course. I think the pictures taken from further away appear make it look better proportioned, whereas previous shots have tended to make the fuselage seem over inflated. Hopefully with engines fitted and paint applied it will look beautiful.

Anyway, have a loom at the pictures and see what you think. Any comments are, as ever, very welcome here.

We people on Airliners.net are pretty lazy when it comes to finding links, so can you post one up?

BTW Welcome to airliners.net!

I don;t know how to link them because they are part of that 'A380 Navigator' sub-section which loads without the URL in the window.

Just go to www. airbus.com, click the A380 Navigator, then click the small picture of the more complete A380 leaving an assembly building and a new window will pop up with all the details and access to larger images.

Sorry. I am still trying to provide a link.

Thanks a lot for sharing it with us.
The site is quite impressive, specially the video of the A380 beeing taken out of the hangar!!

Cheers,

OK I have a dumb question - The Airbus site always says this 2nd aircraft will be the "first to fly". Does that mean they're going to fly the first one at a later date? I've seen it also say that the first aircraft is for "ground testing", surely that doesn't mean they won't fly it! Does it!?

Thanks, and sorry to ask such a dumb question!

The first frame will not ever fly, and, after certification, it will be destroyed to test the outer extremes of the airframe.

The second frame will, and it will be the first one to do so.

The first A380 will only undergo ground testing, which basically means that this aircraft will only be used for ground testing. The aircraft's fuselage and wings will be pressurised to determine the maximum breaking point of the airframe's structure. In other words, this 'aircraft' will be tested until it actually breaks. This aircraft, like you said, will not fly.

This is the story how I remember it, it's not that accurate, but that's a general description of the 'use' of the first A380 airframe.

Hope this helps.

So where is the first A380 now then (the one that won't fly) and what stage of construction is it in. Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question but i always thought that the prototype would fly?!
