New Build Piper Cubs

Sat Jul 24, 2004 4:20 am

Has anyone else heard the rumor that the Piper Cub will return to production now that sport pilot is on its way?

Heard it from a friend, so I can't say I know of any basis for it, but it sure would be cool.

I highly doubt that Piper will start building new cubs, but below is a company that rebuild and builds new Super Cubs, and a kit of the original J-3 Cub.

Cub Crafters builds new Super Cubs under the label Top Cub, I hear they are pretty good:

There is also a company called Daytona Cub (based at Spruce Creek, well at least when I lived in Daytona they were). They don't appear to have a website, but I have seen them at Sun n Fun.

At worst, you screw up and die.

Anyone who believes that Cubs are for rookie pilots has never flown a Cub.

The Cub was far more expensive to build than was the Cherokee. Real skill in welding up that tubular steel frame. Dope and fabric work is a dying art, and very much labor intensive.

If Piper was to launch a new low-end inexpensive aircraft it would more likely resemble a Rutan creation than a Cub. It would almost certainly be of new materials and methods.

And if anyone is going to build new "Cubs" it would likely be for patrol and spotting and that sort of work, which the existing Cub population has drifted into.

When Piper relaunched the Super Cub line in the 90's, they never made a profit on it.

There already is a quite nice Cub aircraft that will be offered as an LSA (it's already certified in the primary category).

That is not a Cub  Pissed

I think some of the Super Cubs up here with bust the weight limit for the license by the time you fit them out with 180 horses, 36 inch mainwheels, larger fuel tanks ect ect ect.

But if you want to dropt he 70 bucks on the Wag-Aero Cub plans, and stick 75 horse in the nose, it should work out really well.

Only problem I have with Cub vs. Super Cubs is that you fly the former out of the back seat.
