Do Cabin Crew Have To Fasten Lap Belt For Landing?

Thu Oct 28, 2004 4:31 am

On a recent short flight from CWL to DUB on FR the cabin crew were rushed off their feet to complete an in flight pay bar and shopping service. Then the flight deck anounced "cabin crew ten minutes to landing" which seemed to startle them. They finished up, slammed the trolleys back into the galley and proceeded to be seated just in time and only fastened the shoulder part of their seatbelt but never fasended the lap section. There were 2 CCMs sitting directly in front of me. I was seated in 1A. Is this against regs?

Also during landing the crew were furiously completing paperwork and had no opportunity to observe cabin safety.

The Cabin Crew had also stowed their luggage and coats in a open compartment in the forward galley. If I'm not mistaken this is also against regs?

I'm all for cabin crew being dynamic but this definitely seemed to be at the expense of safety. I regularly travel EI/BD/US/BA and I have never seen crew not fasten their seatbelts fully or for that matter be so distracted for landing or stow luggage improperly for that matter.

Does anyone have an opinion on the above? I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

Matthew

Sorry, Tod, but 14 CFR does not apply to a European airline operating a European registered aircraft in Europe... I would however expect there to be equivalent regulations in British/Irish/European law.

PNEPilot is correct, it would be a CAA or soon EASA reg.

The regs are that the cabin crew should be belted in. My worry is with all that reshing around did the properly latch all the galley compartments.

Always lots of little doors to latch close and catch. I had a torch fly out once at me (during takeoff), I latched the door but forgot to flip up the catch. was just a ferry flight but it woke me up.

Hi,
Back in 1998 i flew FR (737-200) MAN - DUB return, and on the way back to Manchester the flight time was so short that the flight attendant actually sat on the arm rest while we landed! I looked away from my window for a second to see her sat on the end of my row holding onto the seat in front!! I believe the flight time was around 25 minutes due to a strong tailwind. Imagine what would've happened to her if we'd have gone off the runway or if the pilot stood on the brakes.

Cheers

Crew should always be seated and belted during landing/take off... There is only one way I have ever got around this policy and it was while I was giving CPR to a passenger in the galley.

Otherwise crew must be seated.

Well, Kate said it definitively. Hope it worked out for a change.... the CPR I mean.

Good luck on this site. It has it's moments.
