Crew Scheduling

I do not work in an airline myself and I'm always curious about this. I apologize in advance if my questions seem naive.

From reading the many posts on this forum, it seems to me that crews (both flight and cabin) are not scheduled to work with a consistent "team" of people all the time. It seems that the cabin crews are working with different individuals and the flight crews are flying with different people everyday (if not every flight). I would've thought that there are great benefits to schedule a whole set of crew to work together for some period together so they will get to know one another better and be able to serve the customer better.

Also, how are crews evaluated by their supervisors? Do the pursers each day file a report of how each person did that day? Are promotions basically given based on seniority?

There are both advantages and disadvantages of this. As you say, there are certain times when crew familiarity would help, especially with cabin crew. However when people tend to be very friendly and familiar with each other, there is a possibility that they will become too relaxed with each other and then standards can slip...in my opinion more so in the cockpit, when you don't stick strictly to the standard procedures as much because you are familiar with the other cockpit crew members.

WN puts the crew together on trips.
I don't believe that anybody else does that.

Well, sorta. As lineholder flight attendants, we bid for and are awarded schedules so that 3 cabin crewmembers will fly together the entire month. The only problem is that we are constantly trading our trips so in the end we hardly ever end up flying with the same people for an entire month. Reserve flight attendants can and do fly with different crews from different bases almost everytime they go to work sometimes switching aircraft several times per day.

At SWA, Flight Attendants and Pilots have different work rules so our trips are built seperately. Every once in awhile, the cabin and flight deck crews will fly together two days in a row but that is the exception rather than the rules. Under normal circumstances, in a multi-leg day, we will switch flight deck crews at least once if not twice or more.

Our DC9 patterns have both the cabin and FD crew staying together for the duration of the trip.

In the UK we are given a roster for the following month we dont bid for trips,so therefor one could fly with different people every day when doing out and backs,and if you do more than one long trip in a month again it would be different people,i know some people who work for rather large companies who have trained with someone and have only flown with them once i five years.

Some pilots says that Its better to fly with the same cockpit crews because after a period of working together each one know what are the like's and dislikes of the other guy. Thus they can co-ordinate and fly the aircraft the in a better way. But I think Airline companies doesn’t like crews flying together for a long time. May because as CX Flyboy said they might affect the flying Standards and standards procedures inside the cockpit.

Pilots have different work rules than Flight Attendants. There are more goverment rules for Pilots than Flight Attendants. Airlines attempt to maximize utilization of each work group.

If the Flight Attendants flew with the Pilots all day, then the economic advantages negociated in Flight Attendant union contracts would be for naught.
