How To Become An Avionics Technitian?

Thu Nov 04, 2004 11:56 am

How one becomes an avionics tech. guy? As far as I know you don't need to have an A&P license for that, but I was wondering if there are schools or part time programs that one can get into.

Thanks..

First, you learn how to spell "technician".

OK, all depends on what you want to do. If you want to work on the actual aircraft, your best bet is to get an A&P and then take the FCC test. Not that the FCC test has anything to do with aircraft (at least it didn't 16 years ago).

Some airlines allow avionics technicians to work on aircraft without A&P tickets, but that is usually a hangar environment and the airline has a repair stationlicense, so you are working under their ticket. To work the line you normally need an A&P.

The shop environment is entirely different. I don't know much about it, never worked shops, always line.

since you dont have any aviation back ground, join the military to get the back ground. if you dont want to do that get an A&P. but please note that the market is really depressed right now for techs.

Airgxs, sorry for the misspelling Big grin

Military is not an option. I was inquiring for a family member who I think will make a nice addition to the family business. He is too old for military. The goal is eventually to have an avionics shop in addition to the flight school/pilot shop.

Thanks for the replies though..

His best bet would be to go to a vo-tech for Industrial Electronics, take and pass the FCC General Radiotelephone License test and, if possible, take a few courses from the avionics manufacturers you would be working with.

ERAU-Daytona has a two and a four year program for Avionics. The two year can also be paired with your A&P for a four year degree. It is a good program but it isn't cheap.

After being an "Avionics" guy for over 20 years, the only advice I have for anyone considering getting into the trade, is to get a lobotomy.

That should take any of those crazy thoughts out of your head. You'll be much happier and the lobotomy scars will make you look like a pilot....

After being in avionics for over 18 years, I say, go for it! I enjoy it, I've got a nice house, decent car, still married after 12 years. Works for me.........

Hey, I'm married again too so it can't be so bad.
There are a considerable number of schools with avionics curricula.
Start here
http://www.ultimateaviationlinks.com/apschools.html
As for going to a vo-tech academy I'd have to advise against it. The rules (FAR's) are not the same as for the air conditioning industry.
There is something to be said for the lobotomy idea, though...
I do know of a couple of community colleges and state run schools that have pretty good curriculums and I know of a couple of others that I'll never hire from again.
Be careful is the best advice you can get from anyone
