Do ATC Get Staff Travel Discounts?

Sun Nov 14, 2004 10:49 am

An A343/A332 captain told me that ATC in London get staff travel concessions on BA and on other airlines? Is this really so? Does this apply to ATC elsewhere in the EU too?

Thanks for your replies.

not sure about here in the US, but on clearance delivery i have heard controllers asking pilots to take care of thier buddies in exchange for slightly better routings.

Yes.

I know of a controller at CDG who regularly flies with discounted tickets, so I would assumt this to be the case for the majority of controllers.

Not sure which airlines permit this, but we ( KE ) certainly do.

Can only speak for the 4 Nordic countries, no discount here.

In Norway however we have a sytem of familiarisation flights, one return flight each year with SAS&Braathens, Wideroe and RoNAF (C-130)
The fflight is in practice a standby ticket, and has to be carried out on jumpseat (kinda the point). If the airlines have crew that need the jumpseat, and the rest is full, we get bumped.

No freebies for US Controllers. We used to fly jumpseat on occasion for training, but TSA screwed that up.
I don't understand everything I don't know about this.

Yea, I thought air traffic controllers had jumpseat privileges in the U.S.--guess not anymore... Sounds kinda rediculus to me that ATC could be considered a security threat in the cockpit, considering what they're charged with doing on a regular basis.

I know here in Canada controllers in the north get 1 or 2 trips to a major Canadian center a year bought for them by Nav Canada.

Yea J, the agency that hires checkers with a criminal history to steal from your checked bags, and provide security, thinks those of us with Secret Security Clearance are a risk. We (ATC)have some folks who very badly need to see what pilots do.
