Class 1 Medical, What To Expect.

Thu Dec 09, 2004 12:52 pm

Basically what the question says. I have my first class 1 medical check next week and I was wondering if any pilots could help me on what to expect. Also what can I do to prepare for it?

Basically its like an in depth physical. They check your blood pressure and all the normal stuff. They go pretty in depth with the eyes. They make you look at charts, and in the eye machine to check what type of vision you have.

They will also ask you a lot about your past medical history, i.e. Have you had any surgery, any problems that resulted in hospitalization, are you on an medication? They want to know the meds because you are not allowed to fly if you are taking certain medication.

If you did have any medical problems they may ask for a note from your doctor stating that you are ok, before clearing you. As long as you are in pretty good health you should be ok. Good Luck!

OpsGuy got it all. I had my first class 1 medical a few weeks ago. They check height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, urinate in a cup, check the eyes and ears and you're done!

Besides that, there's an extensive section regarding prior medical history and doctor visits. Honestly, it's quite simple and relatively quick. Have fun!

Wow! Two posts and no mention of the infamous rubber glove.
Happiness is not seeing another trite Ste. Maarten photo all week long.

Seeing as I live in the same country as you ZKSUJ and hold a Class 1 Medical maybe I can give you a local perspective. You will have an ECG to check your heart and an Audiogram for your hearing. Then things like Blood Pressure, BMI and you will have to urinate in a cup. The Dr. Will go over all the forms with you and might ask you questions based on the answers you gave (e.g. for me I said I took a Hockey Ball to the right knee and he just checked to make sure I had no problems with my knee cap etc.) The exam itself isn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. He will listen to your heart, lungs. Check reflexes. No rubber glove either for me just a cough test. You will also need a chest X-Ray and have to see an ophthalmologist to get your eyes checked out (those last two things a just for the initial issue, you don't have to do them again for a renewal). After that just wait a week for it to arrive. Easy Stuff!

I was also considering upgrading to a class one medical before I puruse any more flight training. If I go to the same doctor I took my class 3 with, can I just re-enter the same info from my last physical, considering nothing has changed with my health? Also is the history questionaire the same as the class 3? How much can I expect to pay? I paid about $75 for the class 3.

Cheers Guys, I have to face the music tomorrow. The thing with the rubber glove really had me worried, after you see farmers with gloves and cows (on the airforce ad on NZ TV), you tend to be afraid of a glove  Big grin

It seems like most answers here are form FAA or similar tests.

I august i took the JAA 1.class Medical, and it was probably a little more in depth than whats described above.

For me it was:

Blood Samples, and urinate in a cup.
Audiogram
Picture of the eyes. (printed a 3D drawing of my eyes)
Eye check (colour view, distance view, eye preassure)
ECG
EEG ( lots of sensors connected to your head for a while)
X-ray of lungs
Lung capacity (inhale as much air as you can, and exhale it through a machine)
How the ears react to preassure changes
Blood preassure, and normal doctor stuff
stand on one feet with eyes closed.
Clap your hand as fast as you can.

then you're probably done,

Interesting to notice how much there is difference between FAA and JAA medical checks. I got my JAA 1st class medical a year ago and the checks were exactly same what Tg 747-300 described earlier. It took quite a many hours as well and was expensive too!

Best Regards,

Finn Wings: since we are talking about expensive, if I remember correctly EEG and X-ray were around USD 70 each, and the rest about USD 600.
So a grand total of USD 700-750 isn't abnormal for a first time JAA 1.class in Norway.
It's a horrible price compeared to the FAA 1.class, which is around USD 70-100 here in Norway.

All the tests were completed in about 6-7 hrs. (So much waiting)

And it's just the first step on the expensive ladder to the cockpit.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Wow.. you guys got a crazy checkup!!

I got my FAA First Class back in Sept04. Examination took like 25 minutes. Checked eyes.. breathing.. blood pulse.. the old "down with the pants" deal.. NOthing like xrays and business like that for me.

Doc says i'm healthy as a horse!
Cost me 75 USD.

If you're doing the EEG test, a good advice is not to fall asleep during the "resting phase" of the test. I did and it sure showed on the nurses' screen  Smile

Hyper ventilating was quite uncomfortable as well, 3 minutes of breathing in and out as fast as you can. I got weird sensations in my finger tips and saw all kinds of funny stars in front of me. Other than that, it's no sweat as long as you're healthy!

What about the 'stand with one foot right in front of the other with eyes closed and arms crossed' for 2 minutes, challenging to keep balanced.

What about medications for like A.D.D, doesn't it go on the record? I wouldn't want that on my record when applying for the airlines.
