Flickering Reading Lights On New A320's

Fri Dec 24, 2004 6:49 am

All of our new A320/319 have this nagging fault: in the middle of the flight all pax/crew reading lights flicker once. This is accompanied by a sound resembling the recycling of an old fashioned metal switch. This does not happen once during the flight but every 20 minutes or so. The fault never used to happen on our older A320's. Our engineers have not yet figured out what is triggering this fault yet and as such cannot rectify it. Any ideas?

Be happy it is more French than British.

Lucas Electrics!!!!

The Lucas lightswitches have three positions: OFF, DIM and FLICKER

I experienced a similar problem recently on a Frontier A319.

The accompanying sound was a little more horrifying than a big switch.

I've flown on Air Canada's new series A320's a few times and haven't seen anything like that. Something specific to your airline, perhaps?
The primary function of the design engineer is to make things difficult for the manufacturer and impossible for the AME.

Could it be a malfunctioning relay.

Have witnessed it on a one-week old Jetstar 320.

Not to fan the A vs. B flames here but cabin writeups were an everyday occurrence on the 320 series. On the 330 four or five cabin writeups per flight were more typical. I've seen as many as 27 different faults in the cabin on one flight.

Apparently the fix was always easy. The plane made the next flight.

Try to post that in the civil aviation forum and the hell would break out there between A and B fans.  Laugh out loud

I have flown plenty of flights on A319/A320/A321s and never witnessed flickering reading lights. Perhaps I just haven't noticed it... but sounds weird indeed.

It is indeed strange that nobody seems to know what triggers this fault - even the engineers on this forum. On my flight today I noticed that after the flicker, the pax reading lights go off, while those at the cabin crew stations just flicker off and on again. Not sure if the "switching" sound is heard from anywhere else. I have always only been at the forward station every time this happened.

But, yes, I agree with SlamClick above when he says he has noticed many snags on one flight. I too have noticed that. The faults range from broken door hinges (in the galleys) to faulty reclining mechanism of the pax seats.

Did Airbus go to the compact fluorescent-type lights in the 319/320/321 after they introduced the 318? I've been on a few F9 318s with the CF reading lights, and I hate them... my biggest (most frequent and favorite) gripe about that plane. Fade on, fade off, cold, dark light... and the passengers don't understand that they're supposed to fade, so they slam down on those switches trying to get the damned things to come on or off.

Are these faults limited to aircraft with these types of lights? Just wondering.

I work daily on Boeing 777 (sometimes Boeing 767) and I think you guys need to go into the galleys more often!

We have lights that flicker and even just stop working for a period of time, then come on again. Normally once in flight its better, but I would think its safe to say that Airbus are not the only aircraft effected.

Is it a Voltage Fluctuation triggering this Flicker. Is there a Stablizer in the Circuit.

No, we don't have those lights. We have the older more conservative type. I've seen the fading type on the mockups in the factory and I thought they are cool.

The CF types might look cool but when that's all the light you have on a night flight and you're trying to read, it's such a dim, cool light, it's hard to be worth much...

and it was funny to see pax absolutely impatient with the fading concept. perhaps cool for cool's sake here wasn't a good idea?

Can't believe we have to go through a forum to have some info on this event...

LMML 14/32, can you provide me with some more details on this? (Exact description, flight phase, etc...)

Because the engineers in Malta have stopped for a long time going back to Airbus customer support (at least my group: CIDS), don't hesitate in sending me a mail or message, because I really would like to help.
