Blimp Airspace

Sun Jan 02, 2005 1:13 pm

I was just watching the Fiesta Bowl on TV, and was wondering what spacing was needed around a blimp like they used for the aerial coverage. At one point, as the shot from the blimp was being televised, it looked as though a biz jet traveled in between the blimp and the stadium. This seemed odd to me, since blimps don't appear to fly that high. If anyone knows anything about ATC operations in relation to blimps, that would be great.

Arizona State University, where the Fiesta Bowl is played, is not far from KPHX, so yes, it was indeed possible for the blimp to be higher than the biz jet..on final, landing at PHX.

I would think that the separation between the blimp would be no different than any other clearance requirements, with the blimp having the right of way, and the possibility of any TFR's over the stadium.

APFP hit the nail on the head. CPS is right by downtown St. Louis so anytime there is a big game at Busch Stadium or The Edward Jones Dome the blimp will moore at CPS. They close a runway because it's sitting too close but otherwise you just make sure to keep a safe distance. They're big, slow, and easy to see so they aren't much of an issue.

Since you also brought up TFRs, I think those are becoming less of a problem. I've seen more blimp coverage of sporting events recently and that means they're either getting special approval to fly in the TFR or the TFRs aren't being placed over everything bigger than a highschool basketball game. Now all we need to get rid of are the Disneyland TFRs. Mickey and Minnie must be NIMBYs.  Smile

It means they get approval. It's not that hard, all you have to do is be talking to ATC.

I bet all the out of work banner towers would beg to differ.

Well maybe they're more anal elsewhere, but here as long as you're talking to ATC, they don't care what you do. If you're not though, it hits the fan.
