CRJ APU Reliability

Fri Jan 07, 2005 8:45 am

Does anyone know why we've had to change out 5 APU's in as many weeks at work over the past month or so? They seem to be dropping like flies. One seized, another had something let go inside and overtemped, and so on. Could any of these failures be related to glycol ingestion? Or are we just having a string of bad luck? We didn't have any APUs crap out for the four months prior to December. Last month is when everything started happening. The crews are asking if it's something they are doing, but they swear they don't put a pneumatic load on for 2 minutes after start up. Any ideas?

Bagsmasher,

I think its just a run of bad luck. Not sure which Express carrier you work for, but there have been several RJ's running around with no APU at the carrier I fly at. I've had the pleasure of flying 2 of them over the last week. Both were APU door sensor problems... not a problem with the APU itself.

The APU on the CRJ is fairly reliable. If I had to guess, I would say it is over 97%. Every now and then, our fleet just seems to have collective fits, whether is the APU, packs, BTMS's, or autopilots. There will be a rash of deferals, then it will go away for a few months.

Sorry if this has already been discussed, but why are the APUs on some CRJ 200's so damn loud?

that's nothing - you should hear an EMB-120 or 733 APU sometime.
