Brid Strikes And Gen Aviation Engines

Tue Feb 01, 2005 4:37 pm

Can a bird destroy a c172's engine if hit directly or can it stop it from spinning?

I took a bird strike through the prop on a 152 once. Guts from the hub to the tip (and all over the windshield). Engine didn't even hestitate.

It depends on the size of the bird.

A little one (robin or sparrow) would just disintigrate (rather like in a food blender).

Larger ones such as a crow or blackbird could potetntially do damage.

They can certainly put a huge dent in the leading edge, i've the results of birdstrike on a few light a/c. Not pretty, and can be expensive to repair.

It would be pretty hard for it to damage the engine with that big saw blade spinning out front. Maybe a direct hit from a larger, dense boned bird directly on the prop hub could stop the engine or seperate the prop but not likely. As for other catastrophic damage, that's definately possible.
