With Concorde retired the 747 is the quickest.

With Concorde and Convair 990 retired 747 is the quickest.

At least as long as we define "passenger plane" as an airliner and exclude biz jets such as the Gulfstream V.

I thought the fastest was the Cessna Citation X

The Citation X is the fastest passenger carrying biz jet, cruising over mach .92, but the 747 is and always has been the fastest subsonic passenger airliner. They cruise in the high 8's... .86 or .87 usually.

Can't many biz jets go above M.92, but are restricted to this speed by the FAA?

Actually the Tu-144 was faster than the concode at about Mach 2.2-2.4. Currently the Ciatation X is the fastest along with other bizjets then the 744 and MD-11 come below that.

Nope. In fact, the G-V and Challenger, for example, have a max cruise of something like mach .82.

Economics, not the FAA, currently limit bizjet speeds. I believe that Dassault is working on a supersonic bizjet.

The fastest passenger, non bizjet is the B744, followed by the B777
Fastest Bizjet is the Citation X

Don't forget the 747 classic. That should do about .845 making it faster than the 777

What about the 747SP? Wasn't it about as fast as the 744?

I remember there was a site showing pictures of ground speed records set by various airliners, i can't remembre the URL though.

Of course, we are talking about IAS here, still it was interesting seeing an A320 rocketing at 600 Kts in strong tailwind!  Smile

curlyheadboy....i believe the website you're speaking of is groundspeedrecords.com. I was pretty upset to see the record groundspeed for a BE-76 Duchess at 182kts when I flew one at 196kts going from MSY to DAB with a wicked tailwind...and a passenger in the back who needed to take a dump!

TinPusher007 - It wasn't that but was quite the same, thks!  Smile . Imagine to encounter a stream like that directly head-on... gotta change FL i suppose...

Wasn't the fastest airliner the Tupolev TU-144? I read somewhere that it had a top cruising speed of around Mach 2.3

CURLYHEADBOY...I did encounter that headwind on the way to MSY...we had to stop in MOB to take on more fuel. Total time enroute was 4.5hrs. Total time enroute MSY-DAB was about 2.9 nonstop!

TinPusher007 - Wow! Must be a real piss off to have to land for fuel due to headwind! What FL were you? What aircraft? No chance to try a different altitude i imagine...

Nope. In fact, the G-V and Challenger, for example, have a max cruise of something like mach .82.

The G-V's max operating mach number is 0.885.

Normal cruise speed is 0.85 and its long-range cruise speed is 0.8.

I can't speak to the challenger, I only know anything about Gulfstreams.

Around 2.3-2-4, yes. This does indeed make it the fastest airliner ever built.

I wonder if in future Faster travel would be an Important consideration & hopefully a Supersonic Airliner will be built.

Everybody wants to fly supersonically... it´s just the number of people who are willing to pay enough for it that´s too small... And with further increasing fuel prices, dwindling reserves, and an ever more critical environmental situation, it would take quite a few substantial innovations on fuel production and engine technologies, combined with a strong economic situation to get supersonic travel (back) off the ground, I´m afraid...

Never say never, but it´ll be exceedingly difficult.

As Klaus says, the demand is there. I am an optimist. A hundred years ago, flying across the Atlantic was exceedingly difficult. Arguably, it was as much beyond their current capabilities as cheap and silent supersonics are beyond OUR current capabilities.

Ah ok, I was wrong. Point is, however, most bizjets cruise around .82 or so just like the rest of the bunch.

I really feel it would be a matter of time. The solution lies in lowering costs.

Fastest passenger jets (cilivan and military, but not biz jets), maximum allowable airspeed (not maximum design airspeed).

1. TU-144 = M 2.4
2. Concord = M 2.1
3. KC-135A = M 0.95
4. B-747SP = M 0.92
5. B-747-200/300/400 = M 0.90
5. CV-990 = M 0.90
7. B-707-120 (turbojet, not the B model fan jet) = M.89

What would be the rankings considering the max design airspeed wise for non biz jets.

Citation X would go in somewhere around the KC-135A.

Boeing 747 by far. It of course used to be the Concorde until the SOBs shut the concorde program down!
