There used to be an A&P program at a community college out near NAS Miramar. (Mira Mesa College?)

The hell is A&P? If it has anything to do with aviation, Miramar College is the place to go. You don't have to be a student to look up classes or their definitions:

http://www.miramar.sdccd.cc.ca.us/ Just get onto Miramar Road and near the I-15, take Black Mountain Road, I think it goes straight there.

I went to Mesa they used to have aviation class there back in the day, but they moved tham all up to miramar.

DASH8TECH,

Why not just tell your friend to forget avaition and go into computers instead?

There's around 20,000 unemployed / underemployed A&Ps in the US now...he'd be better off doing something more secure.....

He's stationed at North Island, about to retire - or possibly extend to shore duty for two more years to get the schooling out of the way.

I don't think computers is all that great right now either, in the extremely high-tech Portland (OR) area where I am at least those types jobs are difficult to land too.

I realize there's a lot of unemplyed A&P's out there but depending on what you're looking for you can still find a job. My company still needs some...

Tell your friend to extend for two years to get schooling out of the way. Trust me, he will be better off. But you probably already know that.

P.S. He's not planning to stay in the San Diego area is he?

Your friend has to have realistic hopes about the use of an A&P in aviation. He's (she's) got to understand the shape that the industry is in now, the number of unemployed technicians, and the changing role of techs. Also, the ability to draw a decent salary within a reasonable amount of time is a huge issue in most cases. If your buddy goes in because he loves airplanes and understands that his options may be very limited, god bless him. If he found out that its a great way to make money, meet women and get respect thru a TV commercial for an A&P school, he's barking up the wrong tree.

LMP, he's decided to extend and yep, he's leaving the area.

Aogdesk (Cool handle by the way, we've got Bombardiers on speed-dial!  headache  ). We've talked about the industry and he's looking to come back and work with me again (we were working A-6's together a few years back) and isn't worried about the money so much (he'll be a retired Senior Chief). Just wants to stay in aviation, work for his old buddy and make a decent enough living and travel some.

Jim, if you're serious go here and send in a resume to the address.

Good move on your friends part to extend and finish his education while still in the Navy. The fact that he will be drawing a retirement check will help him weather the volatile nature of the airline industry if he decides to do that route. Can't say I blame him leaving the San Diego area once he retires. I was stationed there when I was in the Navy as well. Nice town but way to expensive. Especially for guys like us.

LMP, although I was never stationed there (only Whidbey Island) I did see on numerous dets to the area how expensive it was. He was just up visiting us last week (we live 35 miles from PDX / KPDX), USA - Oregon">PDX) and told my wife and I how if our house were in San Diego it would cost over $400,000, it's just a simple 3 bedroom 2 bath 1500 square foot 'cookie cutter' neighborhood home - crazy.

By the way, has the senior chief looked into getting the FAA to sign off on his level of experience so he can go ahead and take the oral and practical for at least one of his licenses. That's what I did for my powerplant license, Saved me a lot of time and money.

It's his time and money I guess. I just remember all the time and money it saved me getting my powerplant while sill in the Navy.
