Best Engine For The A330 And Why?

Tue Mar 29, 2005 5:23 pm

What is the best engine of the three choices (PW/RR/GE) for the A330-200 and 300? Just curious what the major differences are, fleet commonality aside.

I think commonality with existing WB engines in a fleet plays a role. (maintenance, relations with the OEM).

On the A330 RR, PW and GE each have a substantial number of customers.

Interesting example LH used to be a GE CF6 user, but ordered A330s with RR engines, a new LH/RR maintenance facility in Germany was included in the deal..

PLEASE excuse my complete ignorance, but what are the main factors when choosing an engine? Is it really not as much of a deal as long as the rest of the fleet is common with them (that was meant to sound vague and naive in order to invoke explanation) or do some airlines need the highest powered one because of shorter runways they operate on? And obviously, price on the units and spares is a huge part, and like I said earlier this whole question is meant to sound very vague so someone can answer some questions I've always wondered about. Sorry to hijack this thread but I figured it might actually be a good time to ask this. Thanks to anyone who can shed some light, but feel free to delete this post if its just too worthless  Wink

As far as the best engine for the A330 IMO, the GE CF6. QF operate the CF6's on their A330 fleet (commonality along with the 763ER's and 744ER's). From what I understand the A330 CF6 engines perform much better than the earlier versions which power the 763's. The engines also have a much higher bypass ratio than the previous CF6. (6.6:1 compared to 6:1 I think)

I guess the reason I think this is the best engine for the A330 is because a) it looks good (especially with the new nacelles) and b) it sounds good!

PW 4168, I belive it's the most powerful one and it looks really good on the A330.

The Pratts are actually the lowest powered ones as Pratt did not develop a 70K+ thrust version whereas GE and Rolls did.

LH chose Rolls for the A330 as it had already ordered A346s with Rolls(the only engine available). Rolls also was chosen for the A380.

My favourite engine for the 330 is the Roll Royce Trent, she is not only quiet but she produces wonderful engine sound , absolutely lovely , GE is 2nd in my choice.
Airliners is the wings of my life.

I was actually hoping for more operational/performance feedback...and not aesthetics.

*Sigh* Actually I didn't although now it's all too clear. I wasn't sure whether to put it in regular Civ Av, Tech/Ops, or Polls & Prefs. Any way to move the whole thing over to Tech/Ops?
