Any Possibility Of This?

Mon Apr 04, 2005 9:57 pm

I know it may be very difficult to engineer and build but would there be any chance of designing a plane with flapping wings? I have no idea how it would work but if birds can fly then there must be some crazy way for a plane to fly to same way.

Just to humor you tech guys a bit...My Cousin (who's 45) honestly believes that planes are designed to flap their wings during flight to save fuel. He came to this conclusion when he noticed the wings flexing from turbulence.

I know it's a bit off-topic, but I saw the thread and I thought you guys might like a laugh or two.

Cheers,
Patrick

Or physics.

Or soaring birds. They keep their wings still when thermalling or using orographic lift.

Hey people: If there was a thermodynamic advantage to flapping our wings, it would have been thought of by now. Remember, if you're going to flap your wings, energy must be expended.

They can't even get the damn overhead bins to work, let alone a 50,000+ lb articulated wing.
