What Exactly Is This?

Thu Apr 07, 2005 8:42 am

I was at AMS yesterday, and noticed on this KLM 767 what looks like it might be an air intake or some kind of access hatch. Does anyone know exactly what purpose this serves? I've never seen it before.

Air intake for the APU maybe?

Hi Paul-

I'm almost certain that is the APU inlet door. This is where the air enters the rear fuselage and runs through a duct to the APU in the tail. You can see a similar type of door on the 737 in a slightly different location:

If by any chance this is not what I think it is, it is probably a part of the aircraft's pressurization/air conditioning system.

Thanks N243NW, I always wondered where the APU's air supply came from. Makes sense!

It's the APU air inlet door. 757's and777's have them there as well.

Would the inlet door on the A320 be just below the front of the tail on the co pilots side? Similar to the 737?

When I was young I noticed this on a 747 and I was scared that that part of the plane was broken. On the 747 that opening looks big.

Usually you will see heat waves coming out of this opening from the APU.

The A320 APU inlet is on the bottom of the tail cone.

JAGFlyer,

There should be no heat coming out of this door, since it is used to suck COOL air into the APU. The heat comes out of the exhaust in the tail.

The 747 APU inlet door is the most obvious I think.
