Dash 8-400s Have Five Doors? Why?

Mon Apr 11, 2005 1:31 am

Until today, I did not notice that the Dash 8-400 actually has 5 doors. It's got 4 main service doors, plus the one emergency exit door on the front right side, like the earlier Dash 8s. My question is, why? Are 4 service doors not enough to evaucate up to 78 passengers if necessary? Or perhaps there's a galley which makes egress from the 1R door slow? I think it's odd that the two doors are so close together.

There are two pax doors on the left side, one forward and is the main entrance. The one aft has a folding stairway for optional entry and exit of pax.
There is a galley service door on right aft side also used as a emergency exit. Then there is a type II/III emergency exit forward on the right side.
Just forward of the emergency exit on the right side is the forward baggage door.

There are only 4 emergency exits on the aircraft not including the ckpt which has a overhead escape hatch that always leaks water.

That must be awful.
I wonder why they didn't make it water tight.... Big grin

Uhh, isn't that bad when there is a leak anywhere on the fuselage?

It probably seals better when it's pressurized, since the hatch most likely opens inwards.

That forward door on the q-400's is acually for carry on bags. there is a small area for storage. For our planes that is why there is no row 1 on that side of the aircraft.

But why is a door required there? Couldn't they just bring the bags in from 1L, and save the weight of a door?
