INS Vendors

Sat Apr 16, 2005 4:43 am

Which company provides INS systems for Boeing airliners such as 777 and 747 ? I was reading that the modern INS systems have sophisticated electronic logic built into them. The heart of this logic is usually a microprocessor/microcontroller of the same capability at a Intel 80486 processor. Is there an airliner "BUS" on which hooks the INS with other logical components to the flight computer ? Many thanks for the answers

Quoting Gopal (Thread starter):

The INS for the 747 classic are manufactured by Marconi, Litton (LTN-92), Delco Electronics (Carrousel IV).
744 and 777 are most probably equipped with IRS.
Honeywell and Sextant Avionique are other vendors for those systems.

Yes, the FMS, using ADIRU's (Air Data + Inertial Reference Unit), GPS, VOR and DME receivers, is integrated to send and receive signals/imputs to other aircraft systems, such as DADC, weather radar, GPWS, FADEC, FDR.
This is accomplished through avionics communication buses.
