Is There A Reason For This Headgear?

Wed May 18, 2005 3:36 am

Is this the latest trend for Russian pilots, or is there a reason this bloke has got a tea-cosy on his head?

Perhaps it's a religious thing?

Or the latest fashion trend for Polish cargo pilots?

Probably it does get a bit cold if they aren't running the heat (to save fuel). Russian mothers are famous for overdressing their children, and this carries into adulthood. Older Russian/Ukrainian/Belarussian/whatever women will often stop strangers on the street and scold them if they are not wearing proper clothing (in their opinion). The pilot is being a good boy and wearing his hat. If he has a cold, he likely has put mustard compresses in his socks too!

I'm not the least bit familiar with Russian pilots/aircraft but i now see some interesting things in that pix. For starters, it looks like his coat collar is flipped up, suggesting that he could be cold after all. It also looks like he may not even be a pilot, more like an engineer, as looking out the windows suggests that he is in a maintenance area. I don't know enough about flight controls to know the aircraft's present state, but the throttles look somewhat "engaged" yet the gentleman is not wearing a safety harness. Maybe the cap is just part of his skydrol protection plan. Big grin

Well, I hate to rain on y'all's parade, but by simply clicking on the photo we see that:

A) It was taken in August in NJ, so if he is cold it is because the a/c is cranked up too much.

B) The photographer was pretty convinced that this man was the captain.

Back to the drawing board.

Are those cooling fans on windshield or emergency trolling motors for ditching at sea.
I would help you but it is not in the contract

Just my guess...

1. He's bald or severe thin hair up there... he doesn't want to tangle them in the headset.
2. If he's gonna save on the heating while crusing, that probably explains the jacket and scalpwarmer in August... It couldbe 100F down on the ground and it can me -50F up there...

JimPop...
He's the pilot most likely... The engineer would use a handset and cockpit speakers :P
He's not in a maintenance area but in the cargo area... Cargo planes don't sit on the pretty side of the airport...
Engines are still off... that's why he's not wearing a harness.

Well the airplane they are installed on is nearly that large, so that may be fitting.

Could it be some kind of sanitary measure? I think I've seen similar-looking covers that fit over the headphones themselves, against your ears.

Also, I swear I've seen photos of cosmonauts wearing similar headgear.

Judging from the photo, it looks like the plane is parked here, in the top left corner of this ramp at EWR. As you can see, there is a lot of crap laying around, and it is where they usually park cargo planes:

You never know, we can still get some chilly August nights here in NJ. It was taken at night, so it might have been cold out. I'm still going with something that has to do with religion, though.
