Auto Navigation And Autoland In 2005

Sun May 29, 2005 3:15 am

Was just reading through some old threads on this topic about how navigation and landings can now basically be done completely automatically.

So, my question is, are the days of those old "Airport 1975" movie situations over? If both pilots became incapacitated in 2005, could a member of the cabin crew (or passenger) basically just "program the computer" for the plane to arrive safely (more or less!) at it's intended destination?

In short, no. Specific knowledge is required in order to program the FMC (Flight Management Computer). Someone still has to lower the gear and deploy the slats/flaps.

Could someone be talked through it? Possibly, but I doubt most people could figure out how to use the radio.
