Landing At Heathrow

Wed Jul 13, 2005 7:46 am

I was in Old Windsor this evening at a friends house, and was watching the planes fly in over Datchet into land at Heathrow airport. All of the planes were coming in on the same line, when all of a sudden a plane came in straight over Old Windsor instead. All subsequent planes were back in the old line over Datchet. Did this one plane land on a different runway, or was it flying in at an angle for some other reason? Normally they form a line over Maidenhead when landing from the west, and always form a straight line from there to the runway. Apparantly early in the morning they often fly in over Old Windsor before moving further north and over the usual line over Datchet. (Apologies in advance for any ignorant statements made above, I am only an enthusiast and do not work in the industry!). Many thanks in advance.

I'm not a pilot, but I have come from MAN into LHR many times on the flight deck - most of which in the more 'normal' opposite direction over london to land on the 27s.

From what you are saying, it appears that the 'odd man out' over Windsor was executing what is known in the business as the 'West Drayton Snatch'!

West Drayton ATC bring you almost overhead on 180 at LHR with the runways East to West directly in front of you. They then give you clearance to land with a very sharp right hand down, followed by another sharp left hand down to line up on 09.

Hence, the West Drayton Snatch!

It may have landed on the other runway (09R) if it was heading to T4. ATC allow this to reduce taxiing time.
