2 Questions - 747 RR Vapors; Jet Blue's Dome

Fri Aug 05, 2005 7:45 am

I was waiting for the flight BA179 to board yesterday, and I noticed a Jet Blue AB taxiing. It had a dome atop the fuselage that I don't recall seeing on other Airbii. Can someone kindly clarify, thanks.

Also as we were taxiing in the 747, I noticed a vapor stream coming out of a small nozzle on the side of the cowling just below the RR logo, and it persisted even after take off. What was that, and was it normal? I haven't seen this before , but this was from a seat all the way back.

Incidentally, the back rows were not bad, especially in turbulence, contrary to popular impression. The wider but gentler displacements (swings) in the rear are preferable to the sharp jerks you get further up the cabin, and there is less engine vibration, IMHO.

The dome might be for satellite comms.

BA 747 world traveller cabin is fairly comfortable, but the further aft you are the more engine exhaust noise you get. This stops me from sleeping, so I prefer to be as far forward as possible. My company budget doesn't run to business class sadly.
The glass isn't half empty, or half full, it's twice as big as it needs to be.

The vapor you saw is from the gearbox breather. Fairly common on RR engines and older engines. Nothing to be concerned about.

THe Jet Blue Airbus dome is the reciever for the Direct in flight TV service. Every Seat gets its own monitor you get free run of the service, not the whole lineup but enough to pass more than enough time. The whole list is in the JetBlue website I have yet to experience it but form friends of mine whom have flown Jet Blue it is wonderful.

It has got to be great on transcontinetal flights, when you've seen both movies and would rather loose you mind in TV.

Citation501SP is right, its satellite TV (DirecTV). Frontier A320s and Westjet 737s have the same dome. Legend also had the same dome on their DC-9s. The Song 757s use a different dome for Dish TV.

The dome on top of Jetblue's A320's is the LiveTV. It has a GPS and External Antenna Equipment in it.

It's well explained in here, even includes an diagram of the system:

You're right - I work on so may of these systems that I get mixed up as to which one is which. I only know them by the nicknames we assign to the domes.
