Difference Between 747-200 Cockpit And 747-300?

Tue Aug 16, 2005 3:04 pm

Hi, can anyone outline for me the main differences between the 747-200 and the 747-300 cockpit? I assume that the 747-300 isn't a full glass cockpit like the 747-400, and that the bigger jump in technology is from the -300 to the -400, rather than from the -200 to the -300.

Thanks for any info.

Hello Mozart.

Here's a few photos to help start your thread.

To me, the cockpits for the 747-2 & 747-3 look almost identical. The most obvious difference is between the 747-3 & 747-4 (as you mentioned) with the upgrade from steam gauges & vertical tape indicators to the "Glass Cockpit" with several PFD's & MFD's.

I'm sure you'll get more detailed info about the different cockpit instruments, systems, layouts, etc, from the other guys.

Just my ...

When the 200 and 300 were delivered new, there was no difference at all. However, as time went by, the electromechanical instruments began to get very expensive to replace, so there was a push to replace some of those (ADI, HSI and engine instruments). There was also the upgrade of the INS to FMS as RNP 5 was mandated in various parts of the world.

So, today you have almost as many cockpit variations as you do operators.

Chris,
PhilSquares,

thanks for your posts, but I don't understand the following:

INS=Inertial navigation system?
FMS=Flight management system?
RNP5=???

Does that mean that the 747-200 did not have a flight management computer? Or does "upgrade to FMS" mean "upgrade to GPS-based navigation"?

Thanks for any clarification!

Yes
Yes
RNP5=Required Navigational Performance (within 5 miles 99% of the time)

When new, the 200/300 did not have a FMS.

The upgrade that installed a FMS type system allowed DME/DME VOR/DME LOC/DME updating of the FMC. That way the aircraft could meet the RNP criteria. Subsequent to that mod, GPS was available and some, not all, carriers installed the GPS updating.

On a related note, the cockpit of the 744 looks similar to the 777 except with CRTs. Yet we often hear the 777 cockpit referred to as something that set a new standard as though it was the first of its kind.

How does the 744 cockpit differ from the 777 cockpit? Why is it said that 737NG and 787 have the 777 cockpit rather than 744 cockpit? Is it just the difference between CRTs and LCDs, because that seems relatively minor?

Even more funny when you consider that the A320 and the MD-8x had a glass cockpit at the same time as the 744, and before the 777. But it is true that the 777 was a further advancement of the state of the art. As most planes are.

777 has better instrumentation than the 747 generally. I'll let Philsquares and so on give you the details. Sure, they both have glass instrumentation, but the information is presented better on the 777.

As I understand it, the 737NG can present info in various ways. It can do it in the 777 way or in the 737Classic way. So depending on how your fleet is configured, you may wish to chose a different mode.
