Worldwide Pilot Population?

Fri Oct 21, 2005 9:05 am

Every time rent a C172 and fly solo, I feel special and think, "How many people get to do this awesome thing called flying a plane?" Even many solos afterwards, I still get that nice you're-doing-something-special feeling  cloudnine   cheerful

Anyways, what's the worlwide (Fixed wing) world pilot population? What about broken down to categories? (GA, ATP, cargo etc)

Cheers  Smile

I'm not too sure about worldwide pilot population, but I remember reading that in Canada and the United States, approximately 1 person in 440 holds some sort of pilot lisence. Of those, about 15% are commerical aeroplane pilots of some kind (CPL or ATPL).

So, about 1 person in 2600 is a commerical pilot.

A few years ago I read in AOPA there are approx. 600,000 pilots of all levels in the USA. A smaller group than Doctors, Lawyers, etc.

Last time I saw something in the Union literature, there was approx., 61,000 Airline pilots in the USA.

That would be in the US and Canada. I bet it's much lower in the rest of the world.

I wonder if they included only "active" pilots, for example, those with a current medical, or all certificates issued. I'd have thought the number to be in excess of a million for the US. I know many people with at least a private license who have not flown an airplane in thirty years. The US Army trained maybe a hundred thousand helicopter pilots in the late 1960s. Only a handful of these guys are still active but they are pilots for sure.

Also, I'd expect Alaska to have the highest concentration of pilots in the US.

Year 2001 numbers quoted directly out of Everything Explained for the Professional Pilot by Richie Lengel:

1. A little over 635,470 "active pilots" (with current medicals).
Approximate breakdown:
  • 97,360 Student Pilots
  • 343 Recreational Pilots
  • 258,750 Private Pilots
  • 124,260 Commercial Pilots
  • 79,700 Flight Instructors
  • 137,640 Airline Transport Pilots

    2. The number of active pilots peaked at 820,000 in 1980.

    3. Approximately 3 million people hold some level of pilot certificate but of those only about 600,000 have current medicals.

The thing that surprises me the most is the number of recreational pilots! Wow!

That is surprising. Must be because you can't really fly anywhere too far with it.

    Ditto.

Does 5 million worldwide sound like too much as a wild guess?

Me too. I'd like to meet one some day - find out who went for that ticket and why.
