De-icing At Gate

Hi all,

can anybody explain to me why a plane would be de-iced at the gate with baggage doors still open and jet bridge attached?
I'm looking at that right now at ORD and it doesn't seem right...

It happens at the gate all the time with the jetway attached. If you need a squirt of Type I on the wings and tail it's no big deal to do it at the gate. The bins should be closed though, don't know why they didn't do that.

Jet bridge attached is ok.provided the area around the Doorway was capable of avoiding the Fluid splashing.
But why were the Cargo Doors open.

Let me ask a different question -- why can't the deicing be carried out closer to the departure runway? I sat on UA909 at ORD for over 8 hours on Thursday -- EIGHT HOURS -- before we finally took off, because by the time we pushed back, deiced the trip 7, made it all the way to the single departure runway, waited for the snow removal equipment, and the 40 planes in front of us, we were thoroughly contaminated again. Then, we had to taxi back, wait for a gate (which took three hours), refuel, and start over. Nevermind we didn't get anything but water, and if we left the plane to get food, we weren't allowed back on. (Diverting all the MDW traffic to ORD probably wasn't helping, either). Moral of the story: A de-ice pad near the departure runway would have eliminated all of that. Well over half the other planes waiting to take off suffered the same problems. The same problem often happens at DEN.

If I remember correctly some airports do have de-icing equipment near the departure point and I think Charles De Gaulle is one of those

We could all learn something from CDG, then. ORD I can understand, it's an antiquated airport in desperate need of updating. (After all, how can one of the busiest airports anywhere not even have Internet access available?) But DEN is a different story, it's only 10 years old, and you'd think we'd have learned some lessons before it was built.

My gripe is also with the airline, which instead of delaying another flight by a mere hour or so to free up a gate for us, continued to roll other heavies past while we sat and rotted for over 8 hours. Either way, it could have all been alleviated if we'd deiced close to the runway instead of the gate.

I fly for a carrier that uses ORD and your gripes are absolutely correct. If you look at PIT and DTW as examples... you leave the gate, taxi to the deice pad, get cleaned up, and taxi a short distance to the runway and leave (holdover time being a non-factor in most conditions). ORD of all places would be the best place for a few de-ice pads to be installed near departure runways. Maybe in the expansion process, that will be done... although I doubt it.

Also, having the centralized de-icing pads allows for better control of de-ice fluid waste and runoff. Seems like a no-brainer to those of us on the inside of the shiny metal tubes. (that's my opinion anyway)

I saw a Sunwing/Kelown Flightcraft 737 being de-iced at the gate in March. It wasn't that cold either.
Support the beer and soda can industry, your recycle old airplanes!

How cold was it? Was it snowing or raining? What about the night before? What airport was it? There are lots of factors that play into the need to de-ice. I'm not debating any of them. I just don't see how making all these airplanes burn all this fuel and require de-icing multiple times is somehow the most cost-effective option.

Most did NOT go to ORD, because of the pre-existing backups and foul weather at ORD. Actually some planes going to ORD were even diverting. Recipients were MKE, STL, GRR, DTW, IND, PIT, and wherever the planes originally were departing from. There's a whole thread on this.

At MDW we deice at the gates with the jetways back and the bin doors secure. Due to the lack of space at MDW and no remote deice pad we have no choice. It can get quite slick out there.
