Model Numbers - What Do They Mean?

Tue Dec 20, 2005 10:16 am

I searched for this but couldn't find a thread on it, so here goes.

I know about the series model numbers, such as the 737-700. Model numbers are often quoted as 737-7CT or 737-2E3/Adv. There must be some differences from the general series model numbers that these additions describe, but I can't seem to find any references?

Anyone? Thanks!

As CitationJet indicates, Boeing codes indicate the initial customer. If the plane is resold, it retains the code.

Airbus codes are different, and indicate the engine type:

I don't know really. But my guess would be that it all stems from how their databases (manual or cybernetic) work.

I don't know the specifics, but it designates the engines. The middle digit is the manufacturer, and the last digit is the specific engine type.

I think the question actually referred to why they do this.

Airbus system is more meaningful. It indicates a standardised build baseline, though there is likely to be some airline customisation too. Boeing's numbering merely indicates the first operator's configuration, which may or may not be the same as any other.

It's more of a Boeing tradition than anything else, dating from the 707. I think only Boeing use airline codes for the designation. The latest Boeings are being refered to as the 747-8, 787-8 etc, rather than 747-800 and 787-800, so maybe the last two digits are being dropped from now on.

The last two digits of the model number in a modern Boeing aircraft correspond to the company that ordered the aircraft, but it is more meaningful than just a simple designator.

More specifically, this refers to the specific options that are present on the aircraft - each airline chooses the configuration of the aircraft, much like you would choose options when purchasing a car. Each "trim level", so to speak, gets a specific code.

It's the Boeing tail number (I don't mean the civil registration (N number for the US), but the internal number Boeing assigns to the aircraft for production) which specifies what options are fitted, not the customer ID. It's possible for an airline to order a second batch to different standard, yet still the aircraft will have the customer ID number. For example all BA 777s have the -236 series number, yet some have GE90 engines and some Trents.

If you look at the aircraft wiring diagrams you'll see an applicability code, with a corresponding tail number. The tail number identifies all the detail differences, even within an airline fleet.

I still conclude from all this that the databases (earlier, these would have been paper databases) were based on customer at Boeing as a master index. At Airbus, based on engine.

But who knows...

The customer ID at build time will equate to the production standard specified. So you are right, in that when the aircraft is built the options specified by the customer become part of the production standard for that range of tail numbers. However this can change over time (as with the example of BA 777-236 aircraft), so is not the actual determining factor. This is the tail number. If you take a look at Boeing manufacturing documents you will find little or no reference to the customer ID number, but plenty to the tail number. If the aircraft is modified during its lifetime this will be reflected on the drawings, again related to it's tail number, as by now the aircraft may have changed hands.

Actually the 777 introduced a new system, whereby the customers chose from a relatively short list of available options, which the sales people recorded electronically. Before that customers could pretty much ask for anything they liked, leading to horrendous production problems. Anyone familiar with the 747 Classic will know what I mean. There are almost infinite variations.

I heard from a colleague at a cargo airline that they had a standardised 747 fleet, until they bought their second aircraft  Smile

It's not exactly the same, but Lockheed used prefixes on the serial number to identify the original customer and model for the L-1011. For example, msn 193L-1064 is an L-1011-1 originally ordered by PSA.

The full list is in the Jan/Feb 1998 issue of Airliners.
