707 Roll Maneuver Video

Wed Jan 25, 2006 8:03 am

Hi All,
I know this is a subject that has cropped up a few times here before, but I found a video of the actual event. Real interesting - those were the days...

http://www.metacafe.com/watch/50879/boeing_707_prototype/

The question is, bearing in mind what the test pilot says about this and (let's say) you wouldn't get fired or worse, are there any real Jetliner pilots that would agree with him, i.e. a simple '1G maneuver'. and try this for a laugh with your co-pilot mates in a modern day jet (just supposing you could - and get away with it)?

Looking to hear from people like Slam and Philsquares on this, but those people who have not seen this before also like to hear what you think.

If this subject has been done before then sorry and delete.

B/R

Richard,

It was recently discussed here. Seems it isn't so easy to do without damaging the aircraft.

However, don't get this deleted, the video is great! I asked for a photo in the other thread and now I have a video. Thanks.

Peter

What do you think It may have been attempted before that day with no Spectators,or was the Pilot daring enough to try it first time.
I think the former.

I'll go with that statement, Hawk.

Yep...never to be seen again. That Pioneer spirit is almost gone.
It makes me appreciate companies like Scaled Composites for retaining that good 'ol "can do" attitude. Rare these days.

I've seen it before a while back. Didn't know where to find it on the net.

Thanks for the comments guys...

However I am sure that there are some pilots that are out there that have also done the same thing?

My instuctor has told me he did it once in a P-28A. Maybe on my next solo nav I will have a quick go. But small planes are easy...............

Come on Jet pilots.... surely the thought must have crossed your mind?

The only time Pilots would probably consider such manuveres would be on a Training flight or Test flight minus Pax.
But then it would also depend on the Individual.

There are stories told of empty airliners being rolled on ferry flights. But the old tale of "there are bold pilots and there are old pilots, but very few old and bold pilots" rings true here.

Yes, you can roll an airliner and yes it is a 1g maneuver. (One time in the simulator an air force instructor wanted to see if I could fly a KC-135 under the San Mateo Bridge, pull up into a Barrel roll and land on runway 28R at SFO without overshooting. I did it BTW.)

Aside from pure bragging rights after leaving your "board of inquiry pending job dismissal", why would you want to? Just ask Hoot Gibson about accidentally rolling a B-727 and the ensuing 20,000 foot supersonic recovery dive before you think of doing it at really high altitudes.
