Rfid For The Aviation Industry

Fri Jan 27, 2006 10:19 pm

As you probably know one of the most interesting innovation path that is under discussion around the Aviation Industry is that one related to the RFID technology.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a term used to describe any identification device that can be sensed at a distance with few problems of obstruction or mis-orientation. The devices are often referred to as 'RFID tags' or 'Smart Labels'.

Even though this technology has been already applied in several industrial sectors (mainly Logistics, Pharmaceutical, Retail, etc.) in the Aviation Industry we are only at the beginning, with few applications around the world (Mc Carran-Las Vegas, Narita-Tokio, Schiphol-Amsterdam).

IATA itself, with the program “Simplifying the Business” is leading a worldwide workgroup with the following purpose: “To create a representative network to test and validate RFID technology using the following criteria: interlining, diverse geographical representation (assess different radio frequencies), representation from different airline alliances, airport importance as a transit hub and general willingness to consider RFID as the next generation in baggage handling.” (source: http://www.iata.org/whatwedo/radio_frequency.htm)

The main application of this technology for the Aviation Industry could be related to the tracking of:
- Baggage (Track & Tracing, reconciliation, etc.)
- Catering trolleys
- “High value” spare parts
- Buses for the pax
- Fast check in (at least for the FF pax that could be provided with an “intelligent” fidelity card)
- …

Is there anyone that has experienced a real application of the RFID technology in the Aviation Industry?
What’s your opinion about that?

Any contribution about this topic will be more than welcome!
